Career Guidance and Coaching Services
Career guidance consists of services that help people successfully manage their career development. Career development, an aspect of human development, is the process through which an individual’s work identity emerges. Although it will occur on its own as we mature, a great way to engage with your employees is to provide them assistance as they navigate through this ongoing process, which can be quite confusing at times.
Many people seek out assistance from career coaches only when they are trying to choose a career for the first time, or when they are going through a transition or thinking of leaving their current employer. The intent of career guidance, however, is to provide support to individuals throughout their entire career. It’s also a way to help key employees reach higher career aspirations so that they continue to add significant value to the company.
As an employer, providing career guidance and coaching services to your staff offers many benefits, including:
- retention of valued employees
- improved employee morale
- increases in employee productivity and supervisory effectiveness
- increased quality in employee performance
- less time spent managing poor performers
Career development is the process that forms a person’s work identity. It is a significant part of human development and spans over the individual’s entire lifetime, beginning when the individual first becomes aware of how people make a living. For example, when a child notices that some people are doctors, others are firefighters, and some are carpenters, it signals the start of this process. It continues as that person begins to explore occupations and ultimately decides what career to.
Career development doesn’t end there. While many individuals go through this process independently, almost everyone can benefit greatly from getting expert career guidance and coaching. Many people find themselves in need of professional advice as they encounter problems or must make decisions about their careers, for instance when they are considering a promotion, a transfer to another team or department or thinking of looking for a new job or changing occupations. Our career counsellors and coaches provide expert guidance and support to help the individual through this process.
Mid-career guidance services include helping individuals advance their careers and deal with workplace issues. Our career counsellors and coaches can provide advice for career advancement, what to do to be promoted or get a raise, or even help them decide if it’s time to move on. They also provide guidance about getting along with co-workers and their manager, preparing for and responding to performance reviews, and developing resilience and techniques to manage job stress and burnout.
Making a career change. Since most people do not stay in the same occupation or with the same company for their entire working lives our career counsellors and coaches can provide your employees with confidential advice when they are considering this kind of transition.
Career counselling is a strategic resource that employees can use and managers can rely on when work performance, career transition, personal conduct in the workplace and/or cultural fit becomes an issue. It provides a means for employers to encourage their employees to seek career assistance early to prevent small problems from getting out of hand and creating greater barriers to success.
